Need Help Choosing a Climb?

Our Tanzania mountain team can help you compare routes, select a suitable climbing schedule and prepare for your adventure.

01 Which mountains can I climb in Tanzania?

Tanzania offers several mountain and highland adventures. The most popular are Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. Other possibilities include Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Usambara Mountains and hiking routes in the Udzungwa Mountains. The right option depends on your available time, fitness, trekking experience and interests.

02 Which Kilimanjaro route should I choose?

The Machame and Lemosho routes are popular for their varied scenery and gradual acclimatization schedules. Other routes may offer different combinations of duration, scenery, accommodation and trail traffic. We can recommend a route after considering your experience, available days and preferred trekking style.

03 How many days do I need to climb Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro itineraries normally take between five and nine days, depending on the selected route. Longer routes generally provide a more gradual ascent and additional acclimatization time. Your full trip should also allow time for arrival, preparation and recovery after the climb.

04 Do I need previous mountain-climbing experience?

Most standard Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru routes do not require technical climbing experience. However, they involve several days of trekking, changing weather and significant altitude. Good preparation, suitable equipment and a responsible pace are important.

05 How physically fit do I need to be?

You should be comfortable walking for several hours on consecutive days. Training should include regular walking, hill hiking, cardiovascular exercise, leg strength and practice carrying a daypack. Training cannot remove the effects of altitude, but it can make the physical demands of the trek more manageable.

06 How is altitude and acclimatization managed?

The itinerary is planned around a controlled daily pace, regular hydration, meals, rest and guide observation. Longer routes can provide additional acclimatization time. You must tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell and follow all safety instructions, including turning back when necessary.

07 When is the best time to climb in Tanzania?

Climbs are commonly planned during the generally drier periods, although mountain weather can change at any time. Conditions vary according to elevation, route and season. Your travel dates should be considered together with your route, equipment and tolerance for colder or wetter conditions.

08 What clothing and equipment will I need?

You will need a layered clothing system, waterproof outerwear, insulated clothing, broken-in hiking boots, trekking socks, gloves, head protection, a headlamp, daypack, suitable sleeping bag and reusable water containers. A route-specific packing list will be provided before departure.

09 Are guides, porters and cooks included?

A supported climb normally includes a licensed mountain guide and an appropriate crew of assistant guides, cooks and porters. The final team size depends on the number of climbers, selected route and applicable mountain regulations. Your quotation will confirm the included services.

10 Where will I sleep during the climb?

Most Kilimanjaro routes use mountain tents, while selected routes use basic huts. Mount Meru climbs normally use mountain huts. Facilities are simpler than hotel accommodation, and your exact arrangements will be confirmed according to the chosen route.

11 Are meals and drinking water provided?

Meals and treated or safely prepared drinking water are normally provided during supported climbs. Please tell us about allergies, dietary restrictions and medical requirements before confirming your trip so that available arrangements can be discussed.

12 Is reaching the summit guaranteed?

No. Summit success depends on altitude response, health, weather, trail conditions and other factors. Safety always comes before reaching the summit. Your guide may change the pace, recommend descending or end your climb when conditions require it.

13 Can I rent mountain equipment in Tanzania?

Selected equipment may be available to rent, subject to size, condition and availability. Rental requirements should be arranged before arrival. Essential personal items such as well-fitted, broken-in hiking boots are normally better brought from home.

14 Can I combine my climb with a safari or Zanzibar?

Yes. Your mountain climb can be combined with a Northern Tanzania wildlife safari, Zanzibar beach holiday or cultural experience. Additional recovery time can be included between different parts of your journey.
