7-Day Kilimanjaro Machame Route

Tour Overview

Experience one of Mount Kilimanjaro’s most scenic climbing routes on this seven-day Machame Route adventure. Travel through rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and high-altitude landscapes before attempting to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Begin at Machame Gate and climb through the rainforest towards Machame Camp. Continue onto the Shira Plateau before following Kilimanjaro’s southern circuit towards Lava Tower, Barranco Valley, Karanga Camp and Barafu Camp.

The itinerary includes an important acclimatization day through Lava Tower, where you climb to a higher elevation before descending to sleep at Barranco Camp. This gradual approach helps your body adjust as you progress towards the upper mountain.

Your summit attempt normally begins around midnight from Barafu Camp. Climb towards Stella Point and continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak, subject to your health, weather, trail conditions and the professional judgement of your mountain guide.

After the summit attempt, descend through Mweka Camp and continue to Mweka Gate on the final day. Your supported climb includes a professional mountain crew, mountain meals, camping equipment and the services confirmed in your personalized quotation.

This itinerary is a customizable starting point. Airport transfers, accommodation before and after the climb, equipment rental, private or group arrangements, safari extensions and Zanzibar beach holidays can be adjusted around your dates, experience, group size and budget.

Machame Route Questions Answered

Helpful information about preparing for the seven-day Kilimanjaro Machame Route.

Do I need technical climbing experience?

No technical climbing experience is normally required for the Machame Route. However, the climb involves several consecutive trekking days, significant altitude and a demanding summit night.

How physically fit should I be?

You should be comfortable walking for several hours on consecutive days. Regular hill walking, cardiovascular training, leg strength and practice carrying a daypack are recommended.

Does the seven-day route provide acclimatization time?

The seven-day schedule includes additional time compared with shorter Machame itineraries. The Lava Tower day also follows a climb-high and sleep-low pattern. However, altitude affects every person differently.

Is reaching Uhuru Peak guaranteed?

No. Summit success depends on your health, altitude response, weather and mountain conditions. Your guide may recommend stopping or descending when safety requires it.

Where will we sleep during the climb?

The Machame Route uses established mountain campsites. Climbers normally sleep in mountain tents with basic sleeping mattresses. You will need an appropriately rated sleeping bag.

Are meals and drinking water provided?

Meals and safely prepared drinking water are normally provided during the climb. Inform us about allergies and dietary requirements before confirming your booking.

Can I rent mountain equipment?

Selected equipment may be available to rent subject to size, condition and availability. Rental requirements should be requested in advance. Broken-in hiking boots are normally better brought from home.

Can this be arranged as a private climb?

Yes. The Machame Route can be arranged privately for individuals, couples, families or organized groups. Scheduled group departures may also be available on selected dates.

What does the final price depend on?

Pricing depends on travel dates, group size, private or group arrangements, transfers, hotels, equipment rental and optional extensions. A personalized quotation will be prepared after your enquiry.

Can I add a safari or Zanzibar extension?

Yes. A Northern Tanzania safari or Zanzibar beach holiday can be added before or after your climb. We recommend allowing appropriate rest and recovery time between activities.

How do I confirm my booking?

After approving the itinerary and quotation, you will receive the booking terms, payment schedule, preparation information and confirmation instructions.
